WOMEN’S PAIN: VARIATIONS ON A THEME
A collaboration between Kaylin Kaupish (Poet) and Me (Illustrator)
Color Me Super’s project for 2019 focuses on women’s pain. The pain the world inflicts on us, the pain we inflict back in self defense, and the natural pain that our bodies endure. We were inspired by different women of the world to create this series.
Through this series, we do not pretend to understand every woman’s pain. We are not attempting to speak on behalf of Frida Kahlo, the Gulabi Gang, or the Fertility Goddesses of old. We only hope this series will open up a discussion of women’s pain. The kinds we share, the kinds we keep secret, and the kinds that we can help each other through.
Swimwear:
Inspired by Frida Kahlo, this series focuses on the pain that the world inflicts on us. Frida was a Mexican artists who centered a lot of her artwork around her personal pain. The pain of a sickness, the pain of a traumatic injury, and the pain of losing a child. Frida spent much of her life wrapped in bandages, but also filled her life with color and flowers.
Daywear:
This series was inspired by the Gulabi Gang, a group of women in India that banded together to fight back against rape, domestic violence, and the unjust treatment of women. They wear iconic pink saris and carry wooden sticks that they will use to defend women and make themselves be heard.
Eveningwear:
The fertility goddesses of ancient times were said to be both the harbingers of life and death. Their bodies were curved and they carried the future of the world in their bellies. These beings were carved into stone and worshipped for centuries. They were built for the natural pains of childbirth and the changes of a woman’s body.

NEVERTHELESS: A NIGHT OF DUALISM
She was warned, she was given an explanation.
Nevertheless, she persisted.
This night centered around the idea or belief that everything has two opposite parts or principles.
good / evil
female / male
love / hate
material / spiritual.
We want to bring forth the issues that cut us in two, that divide us, and make us think, make us question. We want to hold up the mirror of reality in order to see truths that may be difficult to face and to navigate; thus using art to help forge the way and, potentially, inform a new path.
